Former Haas and McLaren F1 driver Kevin Magnussen is ready to return to the McLaren squad as he will represent the injured Felix Rosenqvist and make his IndyCar debut this weekend.
Magnussen, who took a podium for McLaren at the 2014 Australian GP, left Formula 1 at the end of last season and moved to the States to compete in sports cars, while his then teammate Romain Grosjean moved to IndyCar after Haas decided to do the Recruit rookie Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin for 2021 and beyond.
Grosjean and Magnussen will now compete in the same field again, as regular Arrow McLaren SP IndyCar racing driver Felix Rosenqvist was injured in an accident during the previous race and cannot compete in Road America this weekend.
McLaren’s ties between IndyCar and F1 have been strengthened since Fernando Alonso wore papaya in the 2017 Indy 500, before the 2020 Woking team entered the series full-time with Schmidt Peterson Motorsports and even fielded former F1 racing driver Juan Pablo Montoya that season in Indianapolis.
Additionally, Patricio O’Ward was promised an end-of-season McLaren F1 test after winning his first IndyCar race for the team.
