McLaren F1 Racing driver Daniel Ricciardo reveals his passion for two-wheelers (motorcycles) and how karting is “more professional”.
Since his debut in 2011, Ricciardo has won eight races and made 32 podiums. He’s one of the most experienced riders on the grid, but anything could not have happened if his mom encouraged him to ride a bike when he was a teenager.
In an interview with Jase Macalpine on the Gypsy Tales Podcast, Daniel Ricciardo talks about his passion for mountain biking and how he still wants to learn and improve on two wheels.
Mothers are always right
There is a saying that mom is always right. There is no better example of this than Daniel’s mother’s decision. We can’t even imagine what the F1 world would have been like without the sarcastic Mister Honey Banger.
On the podcast he talked about his childhood and said, “I kind of fell into the four wheels, you know, because I think if I had had a choice as a kid I might have gone with two wheels and all.”
“I built on two wheels, but if my mom had said yes to two wheels, I might have gone for it, so it’s funny that I’ve made them out of the four wheels now.”
“My passion for two wheels is just higher because I haven’t done that yet and of course I would like to do it more,” he said.
Instead, prefer to ride a bike than practice F1 on Friday – Daniel Ricciardo
On the podcast, Ricciardo talks about how the feeling of being behind the wheel of an F1 car has changed over the years. While the excitement of winning and the speed of the game linger, it is far too few and they are spreading out more and more.
“Over the years, the more I got into the sport, the excitement of just running around doing laps on my own, the more I’d definitely prefer to do other things, like through the movements … his job.”
The McLaren star confirms his love for his sport, but the noises of the motorcycles attract him. “It’s fun, I’ve made it on four wheels now and I love it down to the last detail.
But my passion for two wheels is just as great; higher because I’ve never done it and of course I would like to do more and get better. “
His tastes profoundly influenced life as a biker in music; it was the culture that appealed to him: “If I want to be a cool kid, my name is on it.” Karting was more professional for the Honey Banger “a little more direct across the board”.
We can’t wait for Ricciardo to spin and turn on bikes instead of driving the F1 cars in the future.
