“Humble” Seidl unlocks the potential of McLaren’s employees

"Humble" Seidl unlocks the potential of McLaren's employees

Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren Racing, is impressed with the performance of team principal Andreas Seidl in this role as the team continued its recent successes through 2021.

Seidl was one of Brown’s first big dates after taking control of the team. The former Porsche LMP1 boss is now heading the McLaren F1 team in his third season.

Last year McLaren finished third in the championship, the best result since 2012. After switching to Mercedes engines in the off-season, they started 2021 in better shape.

McLaren scored 41 points in the first two races of the new season – two more than last year – and was almost closer to the top positions.

While Brown heads the McLaren Racing Division, Seidl is responsible for managing the F1 team on a daily basis. Brown said he was consistently impressed with the work Seidl is doing.

“I am still impressed with how focused he is, how humble he is,” Brown told RaceFans in an exclusive interview. “He lets the results speak for themselves.

“He focused on creating the right team culture and empowering people. He delegates and empowers his people.

“Some people might think of that kind of personality as a micromanager. He knows exactly what he wants, he sets clear goals for the individual people in his team. But he empowers them to do it, and just like I do with him, he does it with his people, he lets them make decisions and he only intervenes when he really feels he needs it. “

Seidl knows the importance of giving employees the freedom to do their jobs, Brown said.

“You hired her to do a job. Then you cannot micromanage them. You hire them to do a job and when they don’t, you have a conversation. But you can’t go in there and interfere because then you’ll frustrate them.

“I think, look at Andreas and me, we have an excellent working relationship. He knows my sandpit, I know his sandpit and we work well together. “
