Frontal Aspect

It’s one of the most forgotten Lotus models, but it’s also one of the most fascinating. In 2005, Lotus used the name Europa again for a small sports car. However, the original Europa was an exotic looking mid-engined GT car that was built from 1966 to 1975. It may have looked wild back then, but the Europa was designed as an affordable mid-engined coupe built according to Chapman’s “simplify” ethos. then add lightness. “One of the keys to reducing costs was using a 1.5 liter Renault engine, which was already light before Lotus released its engineers.

In 1971, Lotus introduced the Europa Twin Cam with the 1.5 liter Lotus Ford Twin Cam engine developing 105 hp. Lotus then switched to the 126 hp “Big Valve” engine and celebrated its Formula 1 championship victory in 1972 with a commemorative special. It has been upgraded with a five-speed gearbox to replace Renault’s four-speed gearbox and with the legendary black and gold pinstripe paint job for the F1 vehicles sponsored by John Player Special. Due to the popularity of the color scheme, Lotus left it available as an option for Europe, but only the first 100 have the numbered JPS dashboard emblem.
