Gordon Murray’s T.50 is one of the most exciting new cars in a long time. Essentially the successor to the McLaren F1 – arguably the best car of all time – it packs a naturally aspirated V-12 that sends power to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. But the car’s Ultima-based test mule might be even cooler than the T.50 itself.
The small British automaker posted a video on YouTube today of spokesman Dario Franchitti behind the wheel of George, an Ultima – a mid-engined supercar from another small British automaker that normally wears a Chevy V-8 – powered by the T. 50 V -12 manual transmission.
Since the Ultima was never designed for a V-12, many modifications had to be made to the body. At the rear you will find a large part of the fairings that have been removed to accommodate the intake and exhaust systems. At the front, most of the panels have been replaced with radiators to cool the 12,100-rpm engine.
Even cooler than the funky look of the car are the sounds it makes. This is the first time we’ve heard this engine on the road up to its intended redline of 12,100 RPM and it doesn’t disappoint. Franchitti later tells Murray how impressed he was with the engine’s power band, but says there are a few things that still need to be tweaked, like the throttle response and acoustics.
The T.50 will make its public debut at the Goodwood Members’ Meeting October 16-17. The team will also bring George for show rounds so you can hear this great V-12 up close. If your in the area you won’t want to miss out.
