Good idea to keep DRS F1 cars for 2022 for the time being

Brown: Good idea to keep DRS to begin with for 2022 F1 cars

Entirely new car rules will be introduced in sport in 2022, with the aim of driving closer races and increasing overtaking through simpler aerodynamics with a ground effect.

Although the DRS was not seen on the full-size model of a 2022 car that was unveiled at Silverstone last month, F1 bosses have decided to keep it for at least a season, although plans to eradicate it in the future.

While optimistic that the new regulations will have the desired effect on racing, Brown thinks the decision to keep the DRS is a “good idea” in case the cars don’t perform as expected when they hit the track and with start the race.

“I think after everything everyone has told me, both on my team and in others, everyone thinks about it [the new rules] will work, ”said Brown. “But I don’t think until you get it underway you won’t know.

“So I think it’s a good idea to keep DRS at first, and then, like with sprint races, I think let’s get these racing cars out on the track and find out: Did it work exactly as it’s mandated? Do they need to be modified? Do we need DRS, do we need it for a shorter or shorter period of time?

Because I think just like sprinting, we’re just working on data, drawings, and visuals, and until we see it on the track, we don’t know.

“Everyone conceptually thinks what is designed should work. But we won’t know until we put it on the track, ”he added.

Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff admits the DRS could become irrelevant thanks to the new regulations, but believes it helped make the show a lot better for the fans.

“I think the DRS was implemented because the cars were so efficient in terms of downforce and so equal in performance that you couldn’t really follow them,” said Wolff.

“The DRS effect is actually something that is not fully understood yet.

“I think it’s an aerodynamic device that I find very attractive for the sport. But if it’s easier to follow in the future, it can make DRS redundant. Today it’s a fantastic part of the show.”
