From 2022, 23-year-old George Russell will drive for Mercedes F1 together with his Briton and Lewis Hamilton. When news broke of the former’s deal with Mercedes, fans couldn’t help but post about the young George Russell, who grew up admiring the seven-time world champion. In an interview with La Gazzetta, Russell revealed the most emotional race he’d ever seen as a kid.

Russell unveils the most memorable GP he has ever seen
The Gazzetta journalist asked him about the most emotional Grand Prix he remembers seeing on television. Russell replied, “The 2009 Australian GP, the first GP that Jenson Button won with Brawn GP. I got up at dawn to turn on the television, in my bedroom in the dark. “

Russell was 11 years old at the time, and Jenson Button later won the 2009 Brawn GP title.
George Russell has a bright future ahead of him
Russell was a great addition to the Williams team. Despite being really slow in 2019 and 2020, Russell managed to 100% overqualify his teammates at the Williams. He made a huge contribution to the team as it slowly started moving up the grid and by the end of the 2020 season the Brit had managed to get the Williams into Q2 on a regular basis during qualifiers.

Russell became known as Mr. Saturday thanks to his frantic qualifying pace. In fact, he’s probably one of the best on the grid when it comes to doing a single lap.

That talent gave him his very first podium finish for Williams when he qualified P2 at the Belgian Grand Prix. The race was not run because of the rain, four laps were driven under the safety car and the results were counted, which meant that Russell finished P2 with the Williams team.

Now he turns to bigger things. Mercedes has a masterful car, and Russell already showed the world what he can do when the opportunity presents itself at the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix. All eyes will be on George when he takes over the Mercedes seat next year.
