Future McLaren supercars will have some provocative names

McLaren has proven that it can build some immensely capable supercars. After all, the McLaren F1 is still the fastest production car with a naturally aspirated engine in the world. Anything that can go faster has a forced induction or hybridization that says something. However, with all of McLaren’s accomplishments, the brand’s model names felt like a thought (except for F1).

After developing models like the 650S, 570GT, 675LT and 720S, McLaren finally began to move away from the numerical / alphabetical method of naming its vehicles. This started with models like the Senna, Speedtail, Saber, Elva and Artura, and the latest McLaren trademark filings suggest this is the way to go.

McLaren has three new names – Solus, Aeron and Aionic – protected under Class 12, which stands for “Motor Land Vehicles and Parts and Accessories therefore”.

There are no details on what type of cars will have these names. One of them could be part of a potential upcoming model that would replace the 720S, which has been commercially available since 2017.

Whatever McLaren decides to put up the nameplates, it will not be an SUV as the British automaker has stated that it will not enter “the lucrative super-SUV segment as Lamborghini, Aston Martin and Ferrari”. An interesting remark from Caranddriver could be an indication of what one of the names might be placed on. “Solus” comes from Latin and means “alone” or “alone”, which could mean that McLaren is coking a radical single-seater, similar to the Ferrari Monza SP1.

While the three possible name-bearers are still a mystery, we speculate that the Solus could be a single-seater while either of the two could be a successor to the 720S. The third potential model can focus on hybridization or even be an all-electric model. For once, we can’t wait to find out.
