The world of Formula 1 has been festooned with drama and controversy ever since the sport was invented in the 1950s. In recent years the most significant issue is a driver misinterpreting a tweet, or debate over track borders and whether food catering should be counted in the yearly budgets that were introduced for the 2022 season. Then all of a sudden, just earlier this week, Ferrari, McLaren, Williams, and Alfa Romeo all had their team bosses leave, and all of those teams decided to appoint someone new to take their place over one day. Some bosses left and are not going to any new team, some got promoted internally, and some defected to another team entirely.

Here’s Who Is Bossing What In Formula 1
Williams
Jost Capito is leaving the position of WIllaims Formula 1 team boss
The first team boss departure was Jost Capito of Williams since the team mostly saw its typical Williams level of success in the 2022 season, which is to say, not much. Dorilton Capital – the new parent company of Williams that took over after Claire Williams was forced to sell the team after it endured an entire generation of lackluster performance – wanted better results and simply did not get them. So, Williams made the executive decision to drop Capito even though a replacement has not been named yet, and it is unclear who that will be. Perhaps one of the lower team directors could be promoted to fill the void. Then again, Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto is soon to be unemployed.
Binotto officially handed in his resignation in late November and will be leaving the Prancing Horse as of December 31, 2022. The best he could do for the racing team was a second-place finish in the constructors’ championship for the 2022 season. He could be looking at Williams, although it is unlikely he would join that team.
The step from Ferrari to Willaims is to put it bluntly, quite a drop, and we already know Binotto has been approached by multiple teams, including Alpine and Aston Martin, both of which have seen more success than Willaims for years now. That brings us to Ferrari’s upcoming team boss, Fred Vasseur.

With Andreas Seidl gone, Andrea Stella, left, will take control
Vasseur will be replacing Binotto at Ferrari and leaving Alfa Romeo Sauber. His job will officially begin on January 9, 2023. Vasseur looked especially pleasing to Ferrari as he played a massive part in turning the Sauber team around since he took over in 2017 following financial strife. Vasseur also saw Sauber’s best constructors finish in about a decade by finishing sixth in the championship for the 2022 season, not to mention striking the deal with Audi for 2026. But that means there is an opening at Alfa Romeo Sauber.

Fred Vasseur to leave Alfa Romeo Sauber for Ferrari F1 team boss
Andreas Seidl is leaving McLaren to become CEO of Sauber, however, technically he will not have the title of team boss. Instead, he tasked with finding one. This meant McLaren F1 was without a leader, so they appointed Andrea Stella from executive director for racing to fill the position. Stella said, “We are realistic about the amount of work ahead of us to move back up the grid, but I am excited and encouraged that I am in this journey together with a team full of talent, experience, racing spirit and dedication.”
