“Ferrari wasn’t used to having the driver there so often” – Carlos Sainz talks about how clueless Ferrari was to deal with its constant presence.
Like any other driver, Carlos Sainz longed to join Ferrari, but before reaching Maranello, he forged his own style of work by working in different locations.
What he also wanted to apply to Ferrari was that he spend his optimal time at the team’s headquarters. Unfortunately, Ferrari’s employees are not used to this behavior.
At first they had no idea how he was supposed to be involved in the normal day at Maranello, and Sainz reveals that the people working there eventually had a solution to that.
“It’s a work ethic or a way of working that I discovered at McLaren,” he told Sky F1. “I moved to the UK to adjust to McLaren as quickly as possible in the first year.
“At first Ferrari wasn’t used to having the driver there so often and we had to find ways to keep myself occupied or to say, ‘What should we do today, let’s do something and make it useful’. But then we got used to it and it worked really well. “
That special moment
Sainz was only able to get his hands on the new Ferrari SF21 in Bahrain. To get acquainted with a Ferrari car, the team arranged a private test in Fiorano to have Sainz SF71H drive, and it was at that moment that he realized the extent of its reality.
“I can’t describe my feelings and emotions very well, but I can tell you that you can feel like all engineers and mechanics know that it’s an important day for you and you can see the fans on the fences that they had a pair of banners to support me, ”he recalled.
“It felt incredibly special because I suddenly realized that this moment was the moment I had dreamed of for 15 years. My role models from the past – Schumacher, Alonso, Vettel – all had this first day in Fiorano – and I really enjoyed it.
“When I went to bed that night I got to think about it a bit and I really enjoyed it.”
