Hamilton was a rookie driver when he joined McLaren in 2007. His teammate was Alonso; two-time world champion. The Spaniard announced that despite major fights on the track, he has great respect for Brit.
On the podcast, Beyond the Grid was asked about the rivals he had great admiration for. Alonso said: “Lewis are sure to be the champions of my generation. I think at Lewis we didn’t have, shall we say, the competition I was looking for. It’s true that we split the team in 2007, and for the general people you know, this is the biggest fight you can’t have. “

“But in 2007, I don’t think either of us was ready, understandably he wasn’t ready for the fight because he was a rookie and got into Formula One. And I wasn’t doing my best, not really integrating into the team, and we certainly had all the fights and all the stress together to fight for the championship and we are not well managed at that time. And all the things from 2007, okay, we finish the championship on the same points, which you see as a very big fight. And I think we could both have done better. “
“And in the years that followed, I think I had a better package at Ferrari than he was at McLaren, so we didn’t fight. And now that he switched to Mercedes, he had a better package and we never had the chance to fight together again. So that was the missing point in my career, he’s a legend of the sport. Like Michael, he pushed you to the limit again. Because if you want to defeat Lews you have to do your best, ”Alonso concluded.
