The SUV market is getting denser, but the new company Fering from Great Britain wants to enter the segment with the Pioneer. Unlike almost every other rugged SUV on the market, this one offers an electric drive with an extended range. The company predicts a range of up to an astonishing 7,000 kilometers between refueling and charging the battery.
The Pioneer has an electric motor that drives each axle, and they produce a total of 443 pound-feet (600 newton meters) of torque. The battery alone offers a purely electric range of around 80 kilometers. The pack uses lithium titanate oxide cells, which Fering reports are better than the more common lithium-ion chemistry in extreme weather conditions.

The range extender is an 800 cc three-cylinder that runs on biodiesel. Fering’s announcement states that a buyer will need to specify long-range fuel tanks in order to achieve the claimed ultra-high range.
It’s hard to get the Pioneer’s proportions right in photos. Fering reports that it is shorter than a Ford Mondeo Estate, which measures 191.6 inches (4,867 millimeters). For comparison: the new Ford Maverick pickup is 199.7 inches (5,072 millimeters) long.
The Pioneer has an aluminum spaceframe chassis, and the exterior has fabric panels to save weight. Fering says the material is easily replaceable and insulates better than metal. The truck has an empty weight of around 1,500 kilograms. The stated maximum payload is also 3,307 pounds.
Fering already has a prototype from Pioneer for testing. The company hopes to start production in the first half of 2022. The brand wants the product to appeal to adventurers, explorers and rescue services. Users could even use the range extender as a generator and power lights or other outdoor gear.
Ben Scott-Geddes is the founder of Fering. Previously, he was Director of Innovation, Body In White at Ferrari. He was also a member of the team responsible for the McLaren F1 and BMW V12 LMR endurance racing cars.
