Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton has sent Williams driver George Russell a message of encouragement after his fall at the end of the race at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.
For the second consecutive year in Russell, Russell lost the opportunity to score his first points for Williams after being involved in a violent high-speed accident with Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas while battling for ninth place on Sunday.
Russell and Bottas initially blamed each other for the accident before the Briton publicly apologized to the Mercedes driver on Monday and acknowledged that he “should have dealt with the whole situation better”.
“Emotions can be high in the heat of the moment and yesterday mine beat me,” added Russell.
“I apologize to Valtteri, my team and anyone who has felt disappointed with my actions. That’s not who I am and I expect more from myself knowing that others expect more from me.
“I’ve learned some tough lessons this weekend and I’ll make it a better driver and a better person for the experience. Now the focus is fully on Portugal and the chance to show what I’m really about. Thank you for all the positive and negative news. They will all help me grow. “
