F1 CEO makes stunning claim about women drivers breaking through - 'Meteorite more likely' | F1 | Sports

F1 boss Stefano Domenicali has claimed a meteorite is more likely to hit the earth than a woman entering F1 in a shock comment ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix. Domenicali has claimed it was “very unlikely” F1 will see another female driver for at least the next five years.

The remarks come despite F1 supporting the new all-female W Series which acts as a support race at several Grands Prix. British star Jamie Chadwick has dominated the championship this season, winning all but one race.

Domenicali said: “Realistically speaking, I don’t see a girl in Formula One in the next five years unless something like a sort of meteorite comes into the earth. That is very unlikely. But we want to build up the right parameters with the right approach, step by step, for them to start to race against the guys at the right age and in the right car. That’s what we’re working on.”

F1 has not seen a female diver start a Grands Prix since Lella Lombardi during the 1976 season. Susie Wolff was the most recent woman to drive an F1 car during a race weekend with three appearances for Williams between 2014 and 2015.

Tatiana Calderon became the first female driver to compete in F2 back in 2019 and will return to the grid this weekend. The Colombian star will replace Cem Bolukbasi at Charouz for the two races in Belgium and the rest of the season.

Domenicali’s comments also come in direct opposition to Chadwick who feels a female F1 star is “not too far away”. Speaking to Express Sport ahead of the British Grand Prix, she said: “I might think it’s possible to see a female in Formula One at least within the next five years.

“If you look at some of the younger crop coming through as well. Not even in W Series but outside W Series in Formula 4 or karting at the moment, there’s a lot of potential out there. So yeah I’d like to think that’s definitely not too far away.”
