Daniel Ricciardo made a “mistake” when he left Red Bull, but is now at the right destination at McLaren, says F1 star Martin Brundle.
On the Fast Lane podcast, Brundle endorsed Ricciardo’s second team change since 2018 when he shocked F1 by ending his long-term affiliation with Red Bull for midfield Renault.
The new partnership was unsuccessful, however, and with a ride at Mercedes and a return to Red Bull for 2021, Brundle said Ricciardo made the right call on the JumpShip while he could.

“If he couldn’t somehow get into a Mercedes, where else would he go?” Brundle told the podcast.
“I can’t see him go back (to Red Bull). He probably should have stayed at Red Bull, but he felt like all love was going in the direction of Max (Verstappen) and I can totally understand that. “
“Renault was a mistake we all suspected at the time, but I think he had to leave Red Bull as well as everything else.”
While Red Bull is expected to take on Mercedes in 2021, Brundle added that Ricciardo and McLaren could be rewarded in the long run if they stayed patient.
“I think if he has the patience, and they have the patience, if he stays with McLaren it can bring him back to the top of the field,” said Brundle.
The F1 season continues this weekend with the second race of the year at Imola.
