Poor old Daniel Ricciardo just can’t do a trick with McLaren this season.

The Australian crossed the finish line in twelfth place in the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday evening (AEST) and scored no points after his race was ruined on the first lap by a chaotic crash.

After a poor performance in qualifying, Ricciardo started from position eleven, but showed a lot of speed early on in the first strait and in the first corner. But here there were problems.

Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas got off to a bad start and made a major braking mistake at Turn 1 that collided hard in the back of Ricciardo’s team-mate Lando Norris, causing him to turn off the track and crash into other drivers.

As in previous races, Ricciardo overtook several rivals in the first few seconds of the race and at some point it looked like he was escaping the carnage sparked by Bottas and sneaking into the top three or five.

However, when Ricciardo dodged to avoid the crash, he was hit by Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll, who also picked up Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc on the way through a careless move.

The incident left Ricciardo last on the edge of the track with damage to his McLaren, but he somehow managed to fight his way back to twelfth place for the restart of the race.

The chaotic start caused severe damage to several cars and forced a total of six drivers out of the race.

Both Bottas and Stroll received a starting penalty of five seconds for their role in the crash for the next race in Belgium.

Alpine’s Esteban Ocon took advantage of the chaotic start to win his first F1 Grand Prix, ahead of Sebastian Vettel and a fast-ending Lewis Hamilton.

For the remainder of the race, Ricciardo’s position fluctuated between P9 and P12 and tenth place would have been a successful result as the car’s performance was severely affected.

But he fought for speed throughout the race and ended up in P12 with no points in an extremely disappointing result.

Ricciardo held up Max Verstappen’s wounded Red Bull admirably for most of the race, but he was eventually overtaken by his former team-mate and Kimi Raikkonen on fresh tires.

Norris was pushed out of the race because Bottas was chasing him, which meant that both McLaren drivers missed the points for the first time this year.

Ricciardo will use Formula 1’s month-long summer break to freshen up before the season resumes on August 29th in Belgium.
