Austin ISD and Dell Technologies celebrated the opening of a new science, technology, engineering and math learning center at Northeast Early College High School. The new center offers students the opportunity to enter the highly sought-after cybersecurity industry.
The center includes a functioning data center, state-of-the-art computer labs, virtual reality and esports areas in support of P-TECH – a program that provides students with the education and skills necessary for a career in technology. Through P-TECH, students can take free college courses and earn an associate’s degree in applied science with a specialization in cybersecurity from Austin Community College.
“Our fellows are embarking on careers in the STEM field that have yet to be created,” said Dr. Creslond Fannin, Executive Director of Early College High Schools & Pathways in Technology. “Austin ISD and Dell are committed to providing the academic foundation and innovative opportunities they need to be successful.”
Since 2016, Dell Technologies employees have served as mentors, providing workplace classes and offering internship opportunities. The partnership enables students to gain valuable insights into information technology and cybersecurity, as well as earn industry certifications that enable them to work right out of high school.
“Every job today is in some ways a technical profession, and now more than ever, we need to ensure that all students have access to education and skills to be successful,” said Snow White, senior education strategist at Dell. “Given the potential global technical shortage of 4.3 million that will hit us by 2030, programs like P-TECH provide students with the hands-on experience to fill labor gaps over the next decade.”
The ribbon cutting celebration, held days before the US Grand Prix returned to Austin, was led by McLaren F1 drivers Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo. A major proponent of STEM education, McLaren Racing is partnering with Dell Technologies to launch McLaren Substitute Teacher, a video series for children featured by Dell and McLaren’s best and brightest about analytics, physics, speed, health and Learn the technology that makes F1 possible.
