Antoine Potty and Stéphane Lémeret arrived at Spa-Francorchamps as leaders of the GT4 European Series Silver Cup championship but had a difficult weekend for their home event. However, by taking 4th and 3rd place, the two Belgians remain co-leaders of the championship and have every chance of winning the crown at the end of the season.
“Honestly, we just did not have the speed of our rivals, and not just the McLaren,” explained Antoine Potty. “We knew from the qualifying session that it was going to be difficult, with a 6th place for me in the first qualifying session and an 11th place for my team mate Stéphane Lémeret in the second. Meanwhile, our main rivals in the United Autosport McLaren were twice on the front row.”
From that point on, it became obvious to the drivers of the CMR team’s Toyota GR Supra GT4 that the objective of the weekend had changed. “We were hoping to win when we arrived, but we realised that it was not going to be possible,” confirmed the 18-year-old from Hamoir. “The only aim was to score as many points as possible for the championship and limit the damage compared our rivals.”
Despite a 4th place in the first race, Antoine and Stéphane saw the McLaren drivers take over the championship lead by three points. The following day, a McLaren puncture on the last lap allowed Antoine to snatch 3rd place in extremis. He and Stéphane Lémeret were now equal in the provisional standings.
“We were slower, but we really more than limited the damage under the circumstances,” confirmed the driver of the #8 Toyota. “We now need to work on understanding why the pace was a bit slower this weekend, although it is clear that the Spa-Francorchamps circuit configuration suited our rivals well.
The next meeting will be at the Nürburgring, where I set the fastest lap in the race last year, and then Barcelona. With Stéphane, we have never finished lower than 4th this year. We will continue to rely on consistency and at the same time we would like to get back on the top step of the podium.”
The next round of the GT4 European Series will be held on the Nürburgring from 3 to 5 September 2021. And the two Belgians have every intention of distinguishing themselves on the German circuit.
