A detailed look at the legendary 1931 Alfa Romeo 8C Spider from Zagato

The Alfa Romeo 8C Spider is an idea of the legendary automotive engineer Vittorio Jano and was built by Zagato in 1931. So great is its legacy and accomplishment that it is often compared to the Ferrari 250 GTO and the McLaren F1.

This 1931 Alfa Romeo 8C Spider sprinted for almost all of the leading racing teams of the era, including Ferrari. The cat was also driven by a list of racing champions of the time, including Tazio Nuvolari. It was a great honor for him that Enzo Ferrari himself drove this car in his last career race in 1931 at the Circuito delle Tre Provincie.

With a widely recognized legacy, Zagato’s 8C Spider was an absolute example of exceptional engineering, and here’s a look at what made that ride legendary.

The intelligent design from Zagato

The Spider were tailor-made coaches from the renowned coachbuilder Zagato, in particular two models – the Sports Spider and the Le Mans Spider. The latter became known twice as “Le Mans” because of its spectacular victories in the Le Mans endurance race. Both cars were explicitly designed for different purposes. The Sports Spider had a shorter wheelbase and seating capacity of two, which was a perfect combination for short-distance racing, while the LeMans Spider had a slightly longer wheelbase and was a four-seater, which made it suitable for the 24-hour touring races like Le Mans .

All Spiders were built around a ladder frame chassis, while the Sports Spider had a wheelbase of 110.2 inches and in the case of the LeMans Spider 108.3 inches. Around 184 Spiders were built in the configuration two-door, two-seat and two-door four-seat. With great emphasis on its light weight, each model had an aluminum body that was hand-assembled. The most notable design feature of these cars was the low radiator layout and high wing design.

The Spider’s 8C engine received multiple awards, which was the real reason for its fame. Vittorio Jano designed the engine after the enormous success of the 6-cylinder 1500 SuperSport and 6-cylinder 1750 Grand Sport engines on the racetrack. This new engine had a larger displacement and two cylinders more, apart from being largely similar to its siblings. This new engine was used in both the short and long wheelbase versions of the Spider. The new engine had a displacement of 2335 cc with 16 DOHC valve trains and eight in-line cylinders. The motor was configured with two aluminum alloy blocks and the same material was used in making the heads.

The blocks were placed in the center of the engine with timing control. There were also two overhead cams and a root compressor. This intelligent engine configuration could produce 152 hp. Later the engine was slightly modified to increase performance. This engine, known as the Supercharged Straight 8, had a displacement of 2336 cc and could produce 182 hp at 5200 rpm. The machine’s power was managed by a 4-speed manual gearbox that was geared towards the rear wheels. Weighing in at approximately 2,185 pounds, the Spider’s top speed was 135 mph. The balanced control and handling of the car were characterized by a semi-elliptical suspension next to a rigid rear axle and spoked wheels with drum brakes.

A legendary racetrack car

The 1931 Alfa Romeo 8C Spider is known to this day for its legendary performance on the racetrack. The car has shown its dominant presence in both short and long distance races. Its remarkable performance in endurance races spoke for its strong body and powerful engine. In total, this car had 50 victories associated with its name during its production from 1931 to 1936. The Spider 8C, which debuted in 1931, made things difficult for competing racers. In the same year as his debut, he won the Targa Florio. Additionally, some of the most notable benchmarks in the 8C Spider’s racing career have been its series victories in LeMans.

From 1931 to 1934 the Spider 8C achieved four victories in a row in the prestigious French endurance race. The victories also marked the end of Bentley’s dominance on the Le Mans circuit. During the same period, it also recorded several victories on the Mille Miglia circuit. The Spider’s winning streak continued well beyond Le Mans. In 1932 the vehicle won the Principe di Piemonte, while the legendary Tazio Nuvolari was at the wheel. In the same year Nuvolari drove this car in the highly regarded Swiss Klausen race Hillclimb.

Likewise, in the year of his first LeMans victory, a Spider 8C model sprinted at the world-famous Italian Grand Prix and continued its winning run there too. The Spiders took both first and second place. First place went to Nuvolari and Campari, while Borzacchini and Minoia took second place. The grand victory at the Italian Grand Prix brought the 8C Spider the “Monza” title. The Alfa Romeo 8C Spider’s record-breaking performances in prestigious races and circuits around the world make it a legendary pre-war car. While Vittorio Jano designed an outstanding engine, Zagato complemented it with an equally intelligent body design that cumulatively made the car far ahead of the competition.
