The most recent weekend auction of Monterey Car Week had at least one extremely noteworthy result in the auto world. After selling a whopping $ 20 million (including fees), a 1995 McLaren F1 is not only the most expensive car sold at auction that year, but also the most expensive McLaren car ever, according to Robb Report.
A YouTube user named “Fast Ferrari” was at the auction capturing her final moments:
The classic supercar was sold for a hammer price of $ 20.47 million to a buyer who chose to remain anonymous. Whoever they are, they are now the owners of an “undisputed masterpiece” of vehicle art, dubbed by car enthusiasts as the first true hypercar and one of just 106 McLaren F1s between 1992 and 1998. The auction was held by Gooding & The company’s auction house, and in a press release, Gooding & Company founder David Gooding described the car in equally glowing terms:
“We were incredibly proud to showcase this extraordinary McLaren F1, the McLaren legacy and the entire industry as a whole.”
The most expensive McLaren of all time is a 1995 F1, chassis 029, allegedly the 25th of a total of 64 units. It was originally sold to a Japanese collector who apparently kept it in more or less perfect condition with only 243 miles on the route and sold it “as delivered” to its current owner. The $ 20.47 million retail price is significantly higher than pre-sale estimates, which put the car at around $ 15 million, and slightly outperforms other recent McLaren sales, such as the 15-year-old model , $ 62 million that sold in 2017 and another that ran nearly $ 20 million for two years later.
