Gordon Murray’s McLaren F1 sports car is one of those definitive automotive legends that has become so unique that even their parents have trouble navigating their way around. So we have to ask ourselves why McLaren created not one but two spiritual successors?
Originally conceived by the genius Gordon Murray. Assisted by the equally amazing Ron Dennis. Manufactured by McLaren with the help of German (BMW) engineering. And proudly instilled into the public consciousness as the incredible McLaren F1.
Well, that’s a tough act. But McLaren still did a decent job with the limited-edition mid-engined plug-in hybrid sports car called the P1. After all, as a member of the (notorious) Holy Trinity of Hybrid Supercars (HTH), along with the LaFerrari and the Porsche 918 Spyder, it was inducted into the automotive hall of fame of the last decade.
Still, probably out of fear of direct comparison, McLaren never viewed the P1 as the official successor to its legendary F1. Instead, the honor – along with the quirky three-seat layout – went to the youngest Speedtail member of the McLaren Ultimate Series.
As an elegant high-performance alternative to the beefy motorsport-oriented Senna, the Speedtail was all about styling, luxury and the highest top speed ever achieved by a series-produced McLaren. After all, it wasn’t tested for more than 400 km / h (403 km / h or 250 mph to be precise) on the space shuttle runway for a reason …
Anyway, Siim Parn – the virtual artist behind the spdesignsest account on social media – has seemingly given up on the retro-yummy CGI projects for a moment. He is fully focused on the contemporary 2022 Speedtail as he wanted to make it a “track monster” worthy of Senna’s reputation.
In fact, the focus is on the P1’s earlier motorsport exploits and we dare to say that this virtual reinterpretation would look great even next to the McLaren F1 and P1 GTRs if they were ever given the chance to get real. It’s just wishful thinking right now so we have no idea what changes would be needed to make it a corner carving bomb instead of a top speed chaser …
