2021 McLaren 720S: Cost, Facts and Figures

For years Supercar Manufacturer McLaren was a name that has always been synonymous with F1 – known either as a designer in Formula 1 or for its legendary 1992 F1 hypercar. However, things changed dramatically in 2010 when McLaren Automotive became one Thing was the company decided to develop and build its own road vehicles. In 2011, the world celebrated the debut of the company’s first road car since the McLaren F1, the MP4-12C, which then ended with the Ferrari 458 Italia.

Less than three years later, McLaren presented the successor to the MP4-12C with the 650S. And then again, after a three-year hiatus, McLaren replaced the 650S with the 720S in 2017. It’s now been four years since the 720S was in production and McLaren seems in no rush to replace it. Indeed, why should they? Why fix something that isn’t broken?

The McLaren 720S 2021 is available in the USA in three trim levels – Standard, Luxury and Performance. There is also a convertible version called the 720S Spider which is sold as a different model.

In this article, we’re going to cover everything you need to know about the 720S Coupe available in the US.

A story of 710 angry horses

At the heart of the 720S is the McLaren M480T 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 gasoline engine that develops 710 stratospheric horsepower and 568 lb-ft of torque. The power goes to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

According to McLaren, 41% of the components in the new M840T engine are completely new compared to the 650S’s 3.8-liter M838T V8. Changes include new, lighter pistons and connecting rods, and a stiffer and lighter crankshaft. The bore is unchanged, but the piston stroke has increased by 3.6 mm, which means that the displacement has increased by 195 cc. More importantly, power has increased by 70 hp and torque by 92 Nm. All of this is obviously reflected in the performance.

As expected, official performance numbers are overwhelming. A sprint from 0-60 mph is completed in 2.8 seconds. For the next five seconds, you’ll be over 124 mph, and the top speed is well over 300 mph – 212 mph to be precise. The standing quarter mile is reached in 10.3 seconds. A really fast car, that!

Three driving modes – Comfort, Sport or Track – are offered to change the engine, transmission and driving dynamics of the vehicle.

The 720S is light, agile, and receives F1-derived aero

McLaren has a rich history in motorsport, so it’s no wonder its street cars benefit from its racing experience. McLaren road vehicles have always been about performance, handling and lightness. The 720S is no different. The supercar features a full carbon fiber structure called Monocage II, which is light, strong, safe and stiff. The drivetrain and chassis components are mounted on lightweight aluminum subframes to further reduce weight. The entire car has a dry weight of 2,828 lbs, making it one of the lightest cars in the segment. The 720S has a front / rear weight distribution of 42:58.

The 720S receives McLaren’s Proactive Chassis Control, which has a clever, hydraulically linked damper on each wheel. According to McLaren, this gives the 720S the highest level of ride comfort and cornering performance ever.

Among other things, the 720S has electro-hydraulic steering for a better driving experience and feedback. Carbon-ceramic brake discs are standard. According to McLaren, the carbon brakes can bring the 720S to a complete stop within 30 meters from 100 km / h. Can you imagine the G-forces in such a scenario? It hurts just to think about it, doesn’t it?

The 720S is equipped with 19-inch front and 20-inch rear forged aluminum wheels as standard. Optionally, you can opt for even lighter wheels in various designs. There are two tire options available – you can get either the Pirelli P Zero or the track-oriented and stickier P Zero Corsa rubber.

An active full-width wing is part of the aerodynamic package that increases downforce when needed or reduces drag when going straight ahead. It also acts as an air brake when needed. Another interesting gizmo in the 720S is the McLaren Variable Drift Control, an electronic control feature that lets you drive sideways for fun.

The 720S is a strict two-seater performance supercar. Open the double-leaf V-doors and you’ll find an interior that doesn’t quite have the luxury you’d find in a similarly priced Mercedes or Rolls-Royce. That said, it’s not naked either. The basic version is equipped with black Alcantara and black leather as standard, the colors black and scoria gray can also be selected as an option. The Luxury equipment has the leather options Carbon Black and Cassis, Almond White and Vintage Tan, as it is geared towards greater comfort. The top-end performance trim features Jet Black, Black and Xenon Yellow, Scoria Gray and McLaren Orange or Black and Carmine color combinations along with a heavy dose of carbon fiber details.

The creature’s comfort is a bare minimum, but you get a vertically stacked 7.0-inch touchscreen display, front and rear parking sensors and a rear parking camera, vehicle lift system, a sound system with four speakers (can be upgraded to 12 speakers ). Bowers & Wilkins audio), cruise control, and more. If you want, you can add McLaren Telemetry with a lap timer and three cameras for an additional charge.

The steering wheel is manually adjustable and electrically adjustable seats are available but not standard on the performance equipment. Seat heaters are only available in the Luxury equipment. Carbon racing seats, among other things, are available as special equipment.

Prices for the 2021 McLaren 720S Coupe start at $ 302,000 (estimated) for the base or standard version, while the 720S Luxury and 720S are the same at $ 312,000 (estimated).

Note, however, that these are starting prices and you have a million options and packages to choose from, including stuff from McLaren Special Operations (MSO). Prices will go up quickly with these options.
