Lewis Hamilton’s McLaren MP4-25A sold for £ 4,836,000 in an open auction at Silverstone – a record for a McLaren F1 car.
Hamilton won three races in the MP4-25A in 2010, and potential buyers – and fans – got a closer look at the car at Silverstone after McLaren held a demonstration drive after Sprint Qualifying on the Saturday before the British Grand Prix.
This particular auction was the first of its kind, as a racing car driven by Hamilton had never been under the hammer before.
The special chassis sold, the MP4-25A / 01, brought Hamilton to victory in the 2010 Turkish Grand Prix – a race notorious for Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber’s collision between the Red Bulls. at a groundbreaking moment in the bitter relationship between the two.
Hamilton was finally able to lead a McLaren one-two with Jenson Button in Istanbul Park that day after the two dueled at the top during the race.
This chassis also brought Hamilton from P20 to P6 in a remarkable drive in Malaysia and gave fans a glimpse into the first neck-to-neck race between the Briton and Michael Schumacher in China that same season.
The originally forecast price range for the car turned out to be accurate as the car was sold through the classic car auctioneer RM Sotheby’s.
