AlphaTauri Formula 1 newcomer Yuki Tsunoda is like a kid in a candy store this season.
The Japanese driver is quickly making a name for himself in Formula 1 as the only rookie to have scored points in an F1 class in 2021, which also includes the Haas F1 team tandem Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin. Tsunoda finished ninth in Bahrain this season on his F1 debut in Bahrain.
Last weekend, Tsunoda retired early due to engine problems.
But it was still probably a good weekend for the 20 year old driver (he turns 21 on May 11). Tsunodo, along with several other drivers, was asked about his favorite pastime as an F1 driver during press conferences over the weekend.
Max Verstappen from Red Bull spoke the corporate line and represented almost the entire grid in his answer to the question.
“Driving,” said Verstappen. “The speed, the braking, the power. That’s the best part of being a Formula 1 driver because it’s not very nice outside of the car. I prefer to drive the car around the clock than close all these things to do.”
So much for his love of media obligations.
Then there is Tsunoda. Still a little wide-eyed about the entire F1 experience, Tsunoda secured his bet on the fast car and offered a two-fer.
“The best thing about the formula is driving the fastest car in the world, I think,” said Tsunoda. “Others, I also like to eat good food in hospitality every week. I like that. I really like the food and the hospitality. I really enjoy every hospitality.
“For example, AlphaTauri and Honda are very different. Japanese food at Honda and Italian food for Scuderia AlphaTauri, so I can enjoy these two different types of food in a week or a day. For me, that’s a good thing.”
And somewhere, Verstappen is still laughing and shaking his head – just like during the press conference.
