During the Spanish Grand Prix last weekend, Mercedes team boss Wolff could be heard asking Masi for blue flags when Lewis Hamilton lapped Haas driver Nikita Mazepin shortly before his first pit stop.
The complaint was broadcast on the F1 world feed and was the first time a message was sent to race management by any of the teams.
It came when Hamilton was trying to minimize the loss of time for Verstappen when he extended his first stint. He eventually won the race for Mercedes with a two-stop strategy and passed in the closing stages.
But Haas F1 boss Steiner said after the race that he doesn’t see any problems with the way Mazepin handles blue flags in the race. He believed Wolff was trying to do some publicity by delivering the news himself.
“I didn’t hear the message, they just told me in the debriefing that Toto had said something,” said Steiner.
“But I don’t know exactly why and what he said that. So I can’t comment on it because I don’t know the circumstances, but I think Nikita did a good job today to get out of there.
“Maybe, as Toto, Toto just wanted to make sure he was here [showing] Who’s in charge here and everyone should move when they come along, you know?
“He lay down [on the radio] and he didn’t let his boys do the work. He wanted a little publicity, I think. “

The broadcast of the news with a new “FIA / Mercedes” radio graphic was well received by the audience.
Masi announced that this is a new move that was discussed with the teams last year and that it will become a more regular part of the broadcast package.
“One of the innovations that the FIA has worked with F1 actually came from a discussion at a meeting of the F1 commission last year so that they could hear the communication between the FIA and the teams as part of the broadcast.” said Masi.
“It’s a regular part of our operations. And from that perspective [the race] was the first time it started.
“The F1 group did some trials through their broadcasts in the background to see what that looks like.
“All teams received advice and this weekend will be the first time it will be broadcast live.”
