Williams overtakes Mercedes on the third “championship” battlefield in F1

Williams leapfrogs Mercedes in F1

Williams can at least claim to be ahead of Mercedes in a championship race after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix this season.

The team overtook its F1 engine partner in the DHL Fastest Pit Stop title race after Lewis Hamilton’s team failed to make it into the top 10 in Baku.

Williams posted the third fastest stop in the race of 2.13 seconds while serving George Russell on lap 34.

This compared to the 4.6 seconds of Hamilton’s stop on lap 11, although the Mercedes driver was stopped when Pierre Gasly pulled into the pits behind it.

The 15 points that Williams scored bring the team to 78, which puts them seven ahead of Mercedes and second in the overall standings.

Red Bull is still the championship leader. The team’s 1.98-second lap, with Max Verstappen stopping, took it to 162 points, adding to its victories from Bahrain, Portugal and Monaco.

Williams was victorious in Imola, while Alfa Romeo, which had set the second fastest time with Kimi Raikkonen’s stop in Baku, was ahead in Spain.

In Azerbaijan, Alfa Romeo took double points as Antonio Giovinazzi’s stop was the fifth fastest of the day and the team got just two points closer to Mercedes on 69, Aston Martin on 68 and Ferrari on 67.

Haas is the only team that has still scored a point.
