Why Russell stays motivated despite the lack of points chances at Williams

Russell declares French GP his "best race ever" in F1

George Russell has shown that he remains motivated to finish as high as possible in races even if the points are off the table due to Williams ‘argument with Haas in the F1 Constructors’ Championship.

British driver Russell is now in his third year with Williams, but he hasn’t finished top ten for the team as the team has been pointless since Robert Kubica scored at the 2019 German Grand Prix.

The same could happen this year, but with rival Haas in a similar position, the final place in the championship could be decided by the highest finishing position in a Grand Prix to share the tie.

Haas was 13th and 14th in Azerbaijan, moving up to ninth place, but Russell, who promoted Williams in 12th ahead of Haas in France on Sunday, said, “I had that in mind. If we’re not on the points, we have to focus on getting this P9 back into the championship.

“We don’t know if Haas will score points this year or not, but we make sure we finish as well as possible so that we can beat them even if we score zero. So, P12, again P9 for the designers, that is very important for the team. ”

Russell frustrated with F1 reliability

The French Grand Prix was only the tenth time in F1 history that there were no retirements.

Russell described his drive with Paul Ricard as his “best race ever”, but despite the impressive performance, he still couldn’t get his Williams into the points due to the lack of retirements.

He added: “I was very confident in the car. We don’t usually do that. It’s so frustrating every time we have a good race that there are never any failures or incidents or anything like that.

“I think that has happened three times now that we were 12th or so and had a really strong race. But it will come. I’m just very happy with the way things have turned out. “
