Nikita Mazepin drew negative attention during qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix by keeping Lando Norris on his fast lap. After the race he received a starting penalty and one point on his license. However, he doesn’t really feel guilty about the incident.
During qualifying the track is sometimes very crowded and in order to find some space the drivers in the third sector often drive very slowly. The drivers agree that they will not overtake at this point. Mazepin didn’t do that. He passed some drivers and eventually got in the way of Norris.

In an interview with ao Autosport.com, the Russian said that he had done everything possible to adhere to the “gentlemen’s agreement” after it had already been pointed out to him in Bahrain. “However, it is very difficult when two cars overtake you on the last corner and you just can’t park a third car there, especially when the fourth car arrives at full speed.”

Mazepin believes he would have got in the way of Norris even more if he had caught up with the other waiting drivers and decided to overtake. He doesn’t regret it. “There really isn’t much I could have done other than disappear. Unfortunately, I can’t yet,” said the Haas driver.
