The motorsport world has rushed to pay tribute to longtime IndyCar writer and esteemed RACER writer Robin Miller, who died this morning after a long illness.
They broke the mold when they made Robin Miller. Lots of people didn’t understand Robin, and neither did I when I first met him. And then I find out that he knew what the hell he was doing. Robin was one of the best writers there was, and he really called a spade a spade, and I respected that about him.
I got to know him pretty well and I’m glad I did. He was a great friend. I don’t think there was any other guy who loved racing as much as he did. The fact that he drove short stature and knew what a racing car was like helped him become a great writer too, I think. He knew what was important.
I’m terribly glad I went to Indy to see him. We had lunch together and I stayed for the race but mostly I went there to see him. We had a good chat about the old days. I know he’s suffered pretty hard for the past two years, but man, he’s been tough. He is better off now, but I will sure miss him.

With Robin’s death, there is also a man with an irrepressible passion for motorsport. His perspective as a driver led to his inimitable career as a print and television journalist. Never been someone to shy away from the harsh truth, Robin was very concerned about improving our sport and every rider, from the breadth to the top of the competition. That’s what he lived for. He was a racing driver through and through and a wonderful and respected friend to all of us.

Racing has lost one of its most respected journalists and most beloved personalities. Robin Miller fulfilled his dream when his lifelong passion for motorsport led him to become the leading reporter in open wheel racing. For more than 50 years, Robin has covered the sport he loved with a passionate panache, great sense of humor and uncompromising honesty. I know Robin was really touched by the support he has received in the motorsport community over the past few months in battling his illness. With many of Robin’s friends honoring him and his legacy earlier this month when he was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame during Brickyard weekend at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, it was a fitting tribute to his life’s work in the place that gave him the World meant.

Heartbreaking. I can’t say enough about Robin. His tireless passion for our sport was second to none. I am glad that less than 2 weeks ago I had the opportunity to see him in his favorite place in the world, IMS, and to hang out with him for some time. Rest in peace my friend. https://t.co/KAETqHi6j6

It’s a sad day for motorsport when you lose a racing icon like Robin Miller. The sport of Indy car racing was much better when Robin covered it. Nobody worked harder to cover the sport than he did and the nice thing about Robin was that he told it as it is. He had a completely unvarnished attitude towards everything, yet worked hard to be fair and balanced. He’s right up there with media legends like Chris Economaki and Bob Jenkins. I will sorely miss my friend Robin Miller.
