The new F1 rules will come into force next season. The cars will slow down and the field will move closer together. At least those are the expectations of the FIA. FIA boss for technology single-seater Nikolas Tombazis expresses his expectations.
In an interview with Auto Motor und Sport, the Greek said that the 2021 season will be hard to beat. It is therefore possible that the new regulations, which come into force for the 2022 season and are intended to make F1 more exciting, do not immediately bring the desired result. However, Tombazis is assured that the first goal will be achieved by the end of next season.
First FIA target achieved by the end of 2022
The first goal is to bring the field closer together. In summary; Bringing Haas closer to Mercedes and Red Bull. The difference between them is now three seconds. Tombazis: “We hope that it will only be a second and a half by the end of 2022.” The idea behind this is that the teams with less freedom in technical matters move closer together. It gets more exciting with a standardized package.
Second, Tombazis is curtailing expectations with regard to the predicted loss of speed in F1 for 2022. In fact, the Greek does not want to make an exact prediction, but emphasizes that the rumor that F1 cars slow down by three seconds is probably a bit of an exaggeration. It’s more like a second loss of time.
