There is little time and a lot to learn: Mick Schumacher

Mick Schumacher made an uneventful debut at the season opener in Bahrain. The German slipped under the radar while the starting grid admired Yuki Tsunoda’s performance. The Japanese rookie finished P9 for AlphaTauri. However, Schumacher got maximum performance from his Haas, the slowest car on the grid. The German surpassed his teammate Nikita Mazepin. Unlike the Russian, he also finished the race.

Schumacher admitted that his first weekend in Formula 1 was a blur. The German added that he struggled with many things that he was not used to. Schumacher had to adapt his driving style to Formula 1 cars.

“I think in general I’ve learned a lot of new things … I’ve learned about the tires, that’s probably the biggest new thing for me. Even with things like the downforce that we lose at the start of the race. It’s like switching from 100 percent downforce to 20 percent downforce as soon as you turn into a corner. “

Looking at Imola, Schumacher believes that he feels more comfortable at Haas. This could result in a more competitive performance by the German if the car allows it.

“There was definitely a lot to learn and a lot to see before we went to Imola. I feel like I have a lot more knowledge and a lot more comfort, but I was also very surprised how quickly the weekend was over … it was a case of little time and a lot to learn. “

Tsunoda, isn’t Schumacher the most impressive rookie?

Still a lot to learn, but overall happy over the weekend with P16. Thanks to @ HaasF1Team for the hard work you guys put into this, I couldn’t have asked for a better group of people !! I’m looking forward to the next race. # MSC47 pic.twitter.com/tut7J7iaTe

Yuki Tsunoda surprised the Formula 1 world in Bahrain. The Japanese deserved all of the praise and recognition he received after his debut weekend in the sport. Ross Brawn thinks Tsunoda is the best rookie the series has seen in a long time. Red Bull advisor Dr. Helmut Marko said that Tsunoda will be a superstar in Formula 1. He added that the rookie sensation would be the first Japanese driver to win a Grand Prix.

Schumacher, on the other hand, spent his first race in anonymity. With a car that was unable to fight at the start, the German was trapped in no man’s land. Realistically, Haas can only race himself. However, this was not possible in Bahrain. Schumacher’s teammate crashed on the first lap and didn’t let anyone ride with the German. Schumacher was P16, the last active runner.

Schumacher is in a transition year at Haas. The team has accepted its place in the pecking order. You are now focused on the 2022 season under the new regulations. For Schumacher, this means that he is not under pressure this year. This could help the German, who struggled historically in the first season. However, it will not be easy for Schumacher to watch his Formula 2 colleague Yuki Tsunoda receive all the praise and awards. The German beat the Japanese driver in the feeder series convincingly last year.

Is Yuki Tsunoda the most impressive rookie in Formula 1 this season? May be. But he’s the only rookie who can show his talent. It would be unfair to Schumacher and Mazepin to be compared to the Japanese. AlphaTauri is a far more competitive car. Until Haas has similar machines, comparisons between this season’s newbies are irrelevant.
