The 2021 Formula 1 season was marked by several controversies and accidents. Still, it was one of the most talked about seasons in the history of the sport, with the duel between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton taking up most of the themes.

But one topic that has generated a lot of interest now that the season is over is how much money each driver costs their respective teams. Not salaries, but the costs of crashes and other damage. Accident costs, of course, vary from driver to driver and are responsible for a number of things, all from front wing damage to replacing a chassis.

Of all 20 F1 drivers taking part in the 2021 championship, Mick Schumacher von Haas had the biggest bill. The young German was in bad form in the first half of the season, and team boss Günther Steiner called on him to do so: “Mick had some big races in the last five races. It’s a lot of money and for” no good reason. They get a little too frequent and too heavy. “

The money “donors”

Sky Germany counted the “invoice” of each driver and stated the final amount in euros. From the lot, it was Schumacher who amassed a total of € 4,212,500 in damage in 2021. Given the rand-euro exchange rate of 17.97 rand on January 3, 2022, Schumacher’s bill for 2021 reads as R75 677 803 R. Looking back on his year Schumacher said: “We had some highs, but also some lows, from which I learned a lot and I think we can take that with us this year. Hopefully I’m ready enough for the next challenge. ” Year.”

Charles Leclerc had the second highest bill in 2021, costing Ferrari 4,046,000 euros. Leclerc’s biggest expense came at the Monaco Grand Prix, his home race. The driver had already secured the provisional pole position in qualifying, but a mistake made him crash into the barricades on his last run. He would have pole position, but the damage to his car was too great and he was unable to take part in the race.

Interestingly, Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon – both Alpine riders – gave their team the lowest bill. Both drivers drove cleanly for most of the season and their impeccable teamwork resulted in Ocon winning the Hungarian GP. Alonso (315,000 €) and Ocon (280,000 €) were 595,000 €, which is well above the value that Sebastian Vettel (660,000 €) took in 18th place from Aston Martin.
