Steiner was preparing for further Mick / Mazepin incidents

Haas boss Günther Steiner is preparing for further incidents between his two rookie drivers Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin.

The aftermath of their near miss at the end of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, in which Schumacher accused Mazepin of chasing him into the wall with a late pull, has spread to the next round in France.

Schumacher is expecting a tougher penalty if Mazepin does the same but Mazepin has told his team-mate he will “never fail to block” and doesn’t expect it to be easy against him.

Looking at both sides of the Haas garage, Steiner predicts that there will be more incidents and disputes as the season progresses – not just these.

“How am I supposed to keep them on a tight leash when they’re out there?” Steiner told reporters in France.

“Both are young and have egos and they want to be seen as strong so only the future will tell what happens, but I won’t drive the car.

“We agreed on a few things and we just keep going and hopefully it won’t happen again.

“Can I assure you 100 percent that something like this won’t happen again? No way. You are a racing driver. They are competitive people and there will be incidents again and we will deal with them again.

“Otherwise it will be boring anyway, but I hope you have learned from it and at least we will have situations in the future, but maybe not these.”

Steiner was even asked if Ferrari would get Schumacher out of the Haas environment if there were more incidents with Mazepin, but he felt that this question shows that the situation is now being exaggerated.

“If it affects the future, I don’t know, I don’t have a crystal ball and I think it happens in racing,” he replied.

“I think we’re going to blow this disproportionately. I don’t think it was as bad as you all think.

“It’s normal and happens because our boys are fighting with each other at the moment. If it hadn’t happened to a teammate, it wouldn’t have created so much history.

“But at the moment we are, they are fighting against each other because our car is just too slow to fight against others.”
