On the eve of this groundbreaking spa anniversary, the likable Schumacher Jr. is interviewed by Alex Kalinauckas, who learns that he only wanted to get into F1 because of his earnings and not his surname. And he definitely did that by winning the European Formula 3 and then the FIA Formula 2 title. It’s always been a battle with an undeveloped Haas in 2021, but the focus is heavily on the next season.
Adam Cooper follows the path of Michael Schumacher from his sensational debut in 1991 to his first victory – coincidentally also a year later in Spa. The veteran journalist speaks to leaders who have worked with Schuey at Benetton, including Ross Brawn and Pat Symonds.
A keen sports history student, Sky Sports F1 expert Karun Chandhok has always been keen to get his hands on a Jordan 191. He not only found an ex-Schumacher runner, but also invited Mick to a test at Silberstein. It was an emotional day and Chandhok tells us all about it.
Outside of Formula 1, it was a busy weekend. Nyck de Vries won the Formula E title for Mercedes in Berlin, only when the news arrived that the three-pointed star would be retired from the series at the end of 2022. Matt Kew describes the events in Germany and analyzes de Vries’ F1 prospects.
The British Touring Car Championship was at its best at Knockhill, with Ash Sutton denying Colin Turkington a double and Tom Ingram playing the series’ rules perfectly to claim the other victory. Marcus Simmons reports from Scotland while Tom Howard is on hand to describe Thierry Neuville’s home win for Hyundai in the Ypres Rally, which ended in… Spa.
As always, it’s a bustling national scene spanning 18 pages this week. Racing action was crowned by the ever-frantic BTCC support bill at Knockhill and GB3 at Silverstone, while the latter series unveiled its new contender for 2022, topping the national news sites.
