Just a fortnight later, after getting mad at the way Mazepin defended a position at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, the pair had another go at Paul Ricard.
Schumacher was forced well into the runoff at Turn 3 at the start of the race after Mazepin made an aggressive dive inward to grab a position.
Schumacher then told Sky Germany that he thought Mazepin’s aggression was unnecessary.
“It must not be [like that]”he said.” I think I need to talk to the team again about it.
“At the end of the day, if it has to be, then it has to be. So let’s do our thing. I think he’s doing his. “

While Haas team boss Gunther Steiner said that fights between his two drivers were inevitable because they were almost alone on the track, Schumacher still believes that their fights don’t have to be that hard.
“I think most people can explain that maybe it doesn’t have to be,” he said. “I think He [Mazepin] was pretty open or talkative about it in the press. I think that’s probably his style.
“Maybe we don’t quite get along at this level. But at the end of the day we might have to get our elbows out.”
Mazepin didn’t see much wrong with his race against Schumacher, however, as he felt that their fight hadn’t been anything special.
“I think quite normal,” he said of the incident. “I think when you’re behind there aren’t often opportunities.
“An opportunity arose and I was glad that I was vigilant enough and ready to take and use that opportunity. But in the end I couldn’t hold it.”
Steiner himself said, after reviewing the incident himself and later speaking to the drivers, that he saw no cause for concern.
“I think under the circumstances it was a race, you know, but it wasn’t unfair,” he said. “In my opinion it was a tough race.
“Mick tried to overtake George [Russell] I think what happened and then he just had to slow down because it didn’t happen. Then Nikita took his chance and went inside.
“I spoke to both of them because I couldn’t see the full picture. So I decided it was a race, but it wasn’t unfair.”
