Ralf: Alfa Romeo is not a better option for Mick Schumacher

Ralf Schumacher doubts that Alfa Romeo is a “better option” than Haas for his nephew Mick, with the latter team “not far” from confirming its line-up for 2022.

Mick Schumacher entered Formula 1 with Haas this season, knowing full well that it was going to be a difficult season as the team said from the start that they would not spend large sums to upgrade the car.

Instead, the full focus would be on getting Schumacher and his rookie teammate Nikita Mazepin up to speed while putting all of their design efforts into the all-new 2022 car.

Haas is at the end of the overall standings, even behind Williams, with Schumacher’s best result so far, a P13 at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

This has led to speculation that he could move up to the Ferrari-powered Alfa Romeo team in 2022.

The 23-year-old did not deny that this was a possibility when he was recently asked by Sky Germany.

“I live in the here and now,” he said of the rumors.

“I haven’t thought much about next year. We’ll see what happens in the end. I am sure you will hear it if something happens. “

However, his uncle Ralf wonders if a team swap this early in his career is the best option for the youngster.

Speaking to Sky Deutschland, the former driver who has become an expert said: “There were also rumors recently about the future of Mick Schumacher, who has been linked to a move to Alfa Romeo.

“I can only speculate because I don’t know anything about it.

“Would a change make sense? If he had the chance to drive for an absolutely top team, it would be a great opportunity for Mick. On the other hand, he can still learn a lot at Haas. Whatever he does and has already done.

“If Haas continues to develop and the new car takes a step forward, it would make perfect sense for Mick to add another year. It should not be underestimated that a young driver easily needs six months to establish himself in the team and make the most of it.

“I’m not sure if Alfa Romeo is really the better option. Working with Ferrari is important. It seems to work well – even with the current team. “

Haas team boss Günther Steiner says he will not keep the rumors going much longer.

“The silly season has only just begun,” he said.

“We still have a few things to look at, but we’re not far from confirming our drivers for 2022.”
