Pirelli Mule Car Investment Proves Haas’ F1 Commitment – Steiner

Pirelli Mule Car Investment Proves Haas' F1 Commitment - Steiner

According to team boss Günther Steiner, the investment in the development of a mule wagon for testing 2022 tires for Pirelli is a sign of how seriously Haas takes its future.

Haas has upgraded a 2019 car closer to the performance characteristics of the 2022 regulations in order to test the tires next year, when Pirelli will supply tires for 18-inch wheels for the first time in Formula 1. The test took place at Silverstone last week and Steiner believes Haas has provided important data and experience with the new tires for his rookie drivers.

“This is very important for reduced tests,” said Steiner. “It’s a big change in the next year in general and we need to get our own understanding and data. The drivers have to get a taste of the new tires, get a feel and give us feedback. In general, of course, making a hybrid car that is a converted 2019 car isn’t free, but it’s worth it.

“We’re a serious team and that’s part of it to prepare for the future. As we all know, we are working very hard towards 2022 to get us back to where we were – we have to do that – and it is well worth the effort to get there. This is very valuable information for the drivers to get a feel for and for the team to get some data. “

While tire testing focused heavily on preparing for the future, Steiner noted that the off-season post-Hungarian Grand Prix will be especially important to give him time to further examine some of the team’s broader issues.

“Switching off is not possible, but you can use the time when you are not under pressure from everyday life to think about the big picture,” says Steiner. “I think this is always a good time because if you don’t do anything, you just have the opportunity to focus on the things that don’t need an immediate response and be a little creative and have a vision for the future of the team and for private life.

“It’s always good to have a break, but the biggest thing is that you don’t have to work a lot in everyday life in order to use this time creatively.”
