OPINION | The car makesth the driver: How F1’s new regulations are challenging perceptions

Kevin Magnussen

It is a well-known fact that Formula 1 drivers are among the fastest in the world. These 20 men who line up for each race weekend are the best of the crop who vie to become world champions. Sadly, the honor is not for everyone, but the racer in them still tries to put their best foot forward.

Drivers, however, are often at the mercy of the cars they drive, which, in turn, are at the mercy of regulations. It’s been the case for many years, and one team will always have an advantage over the rest of the grid. The sport then turns into a “chase the leader” game in which everyone tries to make up lost ground and the leader does everything possible to retain that lead.

Often, the result is a sport dulled by predictability and a dwindling fan base.
