KANNAPOLIS, NC (WBTV) – Max Verstappen took his ninth win of the year, but Sergio Perez’s third podium received the loudest cheers at the Mexico City Grand Prix, Round 18 of the 2021 FIA Formula 1 World Championship at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodríguez .On Sunday. Perez became the first Mexican F1 driver to take a podium finish on his home track.
The Haas F1 Team based in Kannapolis had problems with Mick Schumacher going out of the race on the first lap. Nikita Mazepin fought on and took a P18 place.
“A tough weekend,” said team boss Günther Steiner. “Mick was eliminated on the first lap, obviously there was nothing to do and it was a racing accident that happens when you try to do your best. He stayed with Nikita and made the best of it. We had a slightly slow pit stop – we wanted to get out before Latifi – and it didn’t work out so we ended up where we ended up but he learned a lot about tire management. Now it goes to the next one. “
Lewis Hamilton finished second.
Mazepin started from 15th place on Pirelli’s P Zero Yellow Medium tires and gained positions through a chaotic opening curve following to put himself at the top of the top 10. Mazepin came in on lap 13 of 71 for a set of white hard tires and then decided to make a second stop on lap 61 for mid-range to get out of the blue flag cycle. Mazepin finished 18th.
“It was a very long race,” said Mazepin. “We got off to a good start, got through well and the first part of the race went well. Then we decided to protect ourselves from Williams and unfortunately our pit stop was too slow – we just made it, but I think we had the pace to probably put it behind, considering how difficult it is is to overtake on this track. Unfortunately it didn’t happen. Since we had less downforce than we wanted, I had the feeling that it was really difficult to follow cars closely when you were overtaken by blue flags – after that it was a tough race. “
Schumacher started from 14th position on medium tires, but unfortunately his race ended on the first lap. When the field tried to avoid Valtteri Bottas’ spinning Mercedes at the exit of the bend, Schumacher and Esteban Ocon’s Alpine came into contact. This collision caused fatal damage to the rear left suspension of Schumacher’s VF-21, and he was forced to stop the car.
“I’ve seen a lot of smoke and that’s usually not a good sign,” said Schumacher. “I didn’t want to compete against each other, so I decided to go to the middle and unfortunately there were already cars there and we all got together and I got in touch with Esteban Ocon. It’s unfortunate, but these things happen – it’s not the first time in my career and I’m sure it won’t be the last. I was looking forward to driving and learning here, hopefully next year we’ll have a better car and we can attack more. We can always see positive things. “
The 2021 Formula 1 season of the Uralkali Haas F1 Team will continue from November 12th to 14th with the São Paulo Grand Prix at the Autódromo José Carlos Pace.
