Mick Schumacher’s “strange” peculiarity when running

Mick Schumacher's "strange" peculiarity when running

Mick Schumacher has a bit of a “strange” habit when he races. He talks to himself because he finds it helpful to solve problems.

The 21-year-old made his Formula 1 debut with Haas last month, finishing 16th in his first race, the Bahrain Grand Prix.

It wasn’t an easy weekend for the German and his team, and Haas knew that her only ambition this season would be to beat Williams.

But even that may not be easy when Schumacher is two places behind George Russell in a race in which none of his teammates saw the checkered flag.

However, the German will turn to a trick he learned years ago to help him out in battle.

“I was once told by someone that it is very helpful to talk to yourself in the car,” he told F1 Insider.

“When I first heard that, I thought, ‘Hmm, sounds weird’. But it’s actually very, very helpful.

“When you are able to talk to yourself, you can always come back to your own thoughts. You can go through different problems.

“And so it helps me when I talk to myself to be fully focused again.”

As the son of seven-time F1 world champion Michael Schumacher, there has never been a driver on the grid with the expectations and pressure that rest on the young Schumacher’s shoulders.

The German insists that he doesn’t let it come to him, instead the only pressure he feels comes from himself.

“Basically everything is in my own hands,” he said. “What do I see? How do I deal with it?

“In the end, most of the pressure comes from me.”

Schumacher successfully mastered his first Grand Prix weekend on the Sakhir race track and qualified ahead of his teammate Nikita Mazepin.

He spun at the start of the Grand Prix but was able to keep going and drove one lap back to race winner Lewis Hamilton.
