Mick Schumacher says he learned “a lot” from watching Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen duels

Mick Schumacher feels he has learned a lot from the best drivers on the grid in his debut season.

Haas F1 rookie Mick Schumacher believes the chance to race at the end of the Shaper grid is a unique learning experience. He sees it as an opportunity to show what he can do with the right tools.

The 22-year-old defended himself bravely at the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix against Max Verstappen’s mighty Red Bull. Looking back on the duel and the experience gained from it, Mick Schumacher told F1 Insider:

“I particularly liked the duel with Max (Verstappen) in Budapest. I showed that I can stretch my elbows and keep faster cars behind me.”

In addition, Mick Schumacher emphasized the importance of having such experience for him in 2022 if he hopes to be able to drive in a better car with drivers like Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen. He said:

“Certainly a lot. And that is important for next year when I can hopefully duel with other drivers in midfield.”

Sebastian Vettel is a “very good friend” of Mick Schumacher

When talking about his relationship with other drivers in the field, the name Sebastian Vettel caught the eye, and the young German held the four-time world champion in high regard. About the influence Vettel had on his debut season and how he helped, Mick Schumacher said:

“I had a lot of questions at the beginning. And he answered me all. I am very grateful for that. He knows my dad very well and is therefore my first point of contact in Formula 1. He has seen so much and gone through all sorts of situations. But he’s also an extremely nice person and a very good friend in private life. “It’s really starting! Neither Mick Schumacher nor Haas F1 team-mate Nikita Mazepin have made it into the 2021 season to get a point. This puts the team in 10th place in the constructors’ championship. However, with two races remaining on the calendar, they stay within the math competition to finish in eighth.
