Mick Schumacher “driven by anger” after the Imola crash

Mick Schumacher "driven by anger" after the Imola crash

Mick Schumacher admitted that he was “driven by anger” after the first serious mistake of his F1 career at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.

The Haas rookie, winner of last year’s Formula 2 championship, had spun at the season opener in Bahrain, but that was just a minor mistake from which he quickly recovered.

But in Imola, Michael Schumacher’s son made a typical rookie mistake when he spun while warming his tires on a damp track behind the safety car and hitting the wall and breaking his front wing.

Since the incident occurred near the pit entrance and debris was scattered around the racetrack, the 22-year-old could not look for a new front wing quickly because the pit lane was closed and he still had to drive a few more laps with his car in the same Status.

When he got out again, Schumacher found that he was seething with himself and that this had affected his driving – something he is dying to learn from as he builds his Formula 1 experience.

In the end, the German was classified in 16th place, only his teammate Nikita Mazepin still ran after him.

“To be honest, I don’t really know what happened,” said Schumacher of his crash. “It happened pretty quickly, I just lost it and couldn’t get it back in front of the wall.

“I think my driving after that was pretty much driven by my anger – I don’t know if you saw it on the forage, but I had a couple of bridges and walked in the gravel and stuff.

“Overall, I think we have to learn from this in order to regroup a little faster. In general, I just think I wanted to catch up as soon as possible, but unfortunately we were a few laps back. “

It was still a race from which Schumacher could learn a lot, because for the first time in F1 he experienced an interruption of the red flag in the middle of the race and fought on one stage with Kimi Raikkonen – one of his father’s old rivals.

“I think it was good to be able to ride with them to get information and feelings about how it should be [other cars]”Added Schumacher.

“Sometime when I was on the C4 [soft tyres] Right before the red flag, I felt really good about being about to overtake Kimi. I think overall we learned a lot and it was very positive. “
