Mick Schumacher contradicts Nikita Mazepin because of the experienced substitute driver

Mick Schumacher contradicts Nikita Mazepin because of the experienced substitute driver

Not for the first time this season, rookie drivers Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin see things differently at Haas.

But instead of regarding any matters en route between the two on this occasion, the recent disagreement concerns the potential need for an experienced replacement rider to join the team.

Haas boss Günther Steiner is open to the idea of adding an experienced third driver to the team and helping Schumacher and Mazepin on their respective paths in Formula 1, which will certainly be even trickier with brand new regulations in 2022.

This idea was welcomed by Mazepin, but Schumacher does not consider it a necessary step.

“To be honest, I think we’re getting pretty much the best out of the car,” said Schumacher, quoted by Motorsport.com.

“I don’t think that’s necessary. Especially when you know that reserve drivers can’t really drive a lot.

“Of course we don’t know what it would be like, but I think we’re doing our best and I think some qualifying sessions show that we are able to get the most out of the car.”

According to Steiner, a decision on an experienced substitute driver will only be made at the end of the current season.

“If at the end of the season we have the feeling that we need someone, let’s see how it goes,” said Steiner.

“We have not yet looked for a reference driver and are not looking for either. That decision will be made at the end of the year, when we feel it would help us get better.

“But of course the problem is, when you use a reference driver or an experienced driver, the young people lose time on the track because they cannot drive the car because these days you are not free to do what you want to test.

“So there are all the pros and cons to weigh up, and I left it out there. There is a possibility, but no decision will be made. “
