Mazepin “not too confident” with car ahead of debut in Monaco · RaceFans

Nikita Mazepin, Haas, Circuit de Catalunya, 2021

Nikita Mazepin admitted that before his first Formula 1 race in Monaco, he still doesn’t trust his car.

In the last three races, the Haas driver took the checkered flag last and far behind his rookie team-mate Mick Schumacher.

“To be very honest [I’m] Not too confident because I’ve struggled with the car so far this year, ”Mazepin said at today’s FIA press conference ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix.

“I wasn’t able to get the most of it and the balance appeared very late on the weekend when the handle arrived with soft joints. That’s why I found the car very unpredictable most of the time. “

Like his rookie colleagues, Mazepin had limited testing opportunities before the start of the season. “But as you know it’s a 23-race year and we’re still pretty early on. I think it will be important to have confidence in Monaco in the future,” he added.

His priority this weekend is to get more experience in his VF-21.

“The goals are to drive laps and build them up gradually throughout the first RP through qualifying,” he said. “Realistically, we have to find our way here. I think it’s a racetrack and driving skills that play a big role here.

“I’m pretty confident to work with myself, but of course it won’t be easy knowing that there isn’t a lot of downforce in the car to compete with our competitors.”
