Haas rookie Nikita Mazepin described himself as a “must-catch carrot” when he suggested that he was at a disadvantage compared to his teammate Mick Schumacher.
Haas spent most of the 2021 season with the slowest car that is not updated at the end of the season as the team focuses its resources on its 2022 project.
Mazepin jumped team-mate Mick Schumacher at the beginning of the Styrian Grand Prix, but came to his only pit stop earlier because both were using a medium / hard tire strategy.
Mazepin fell behind Schumacher and was lapped three times as a finalist of the 18 runners ranked, while Schumacher was lapped twice and took 16th place.
Mazepin only beat Schumacher to the checkered flag once, in Monaco, where Schumacher was slowed down by a fuel pressure problem.
“I think I drove a very good opening lap, I was happy with the positioning, I prepared very well to know where a lot of cars might be and how to get past them,” said Mazepin immediately after the race .
“But when you have a lot of laps and long straights and you have a very heavy car compared to the other cars in our team, it’s very difficult to stay in front, so I’m not happy.
“But I’m just waiting for a new one to really have a chance, because at the moment I’m just a sitting duck and I do my best at the beginning and then I’m just a carrot that has to be caught and unfortunately I was caught that so it is. “
Whether Mazepin could count on a remedy in the short term, he said: “Unfortunately not. Maybe in the next six to seven races, but that’s not very soon. “
