Magnussen reveals “idiotic” Williams approach for 2021

Magnussen reveals

Kevin Magnussen has announced that he has been approached by Williams to replace George Russell for the 2021 Formula 1 season.

In October 2020, Haas announced that the relationship with drivers Magnussen and Romain Grosjean would end at the end of the year.

Although both drivers are now competing in the USA with Magnussen in sports cars and Grosjean in Indycar, the Dane revealed in his new book “All or Nothing” that he had a chance of staying in Formula 1.

Quoted by Danish broadcaster TV3, Magnussen claimed he was in talks with Williams to replace George Russell.

“I stalled a bit in Formula 1, but I actually had the opportunity to stay because I was in contact with Williams,” writes Magnussen.

“However, it would be like rewinding in time at McLaren and Renault. I had to find a lot of sponsors for Williams or write them a decent check.”

Magnussen added: “Williams saw me as a possible replacement for George Russell.

“‘What kind of team is this?’ I think dropping Russell and keeping Nicholas Latifi was ridiculous, sheer idiocy. ”

In 2020, Russell remained undefeated in qualifying by rookie team-mate Nicholas Latifi and was only beaten twice by the Canadian in races that both ended.

“George Russell is a super talent who won both GP3 and Formula 2 in his first season in this series and the Brit should not leave Formula 1,” said Magnussen.

“If Williams wanted something, the Canadian was out. Then they would have George Russell and Kevin Magnussen, a strong line-up in my opinion.”
