H.Hello and welcome to the coverage of qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix.
After being denied a century of pole position in Portugal last week, all eyes will be on Lewis Hamilton again as he strives to achieve this incredible landmark. But Max Verstappen threatens to spoil Hamilton’s Saturday again after a scorching lap in the closing stages of last practice session this morning.
After the Dutchman was half a second behind Hamilton in the media, he put on a few softs and came first, almost a quarter of a second ahead. Sergio Perez finished tenth, 0.8 seconds behind teammate Verstappen, as his early season fights continue.
Pole position is vital in Barcelona where it is notoriously difficult to overtake him. Hamilton has won the last four races in Spain and his confidence is high having won two of the first three Grand Prix.
“Max is more experienced now and he’s clearly incredibly hungry to win more races and win this championship so it’s game after game,” said Hamilton. “That’s what we’re here to race for, to fight for wins, and the battles we had in those first few races were incredible. I’m looking forward to enjoying more.
“It’s crazy to think that there are 20 races to go and you’re seeing the closest fight we’ve had in a while. Max has a car that wins the championship and a team that wins the championship if we do we don’t say goodbye. We don’t. For my part, experience will help, but we have to get the job done. “
Elsewhere, Ferrari’s resurgence continues, with Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz taking third and fourth places respectively in the third RP.
Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo are equals at the McLaren, while Kimi Raikkonen showed impressive speed to finish the session in ninth place, but Aston Martin appears to be struggling with Sebastian Vettel and Lance Stroll on the day’s list.
