“I don’t know what Michael is trying to do" - Michael Andretti also considering buying a stake in Haas; Geunther Steiner remains coy on speculation

“I don’t know what Michael is up to” – After reports that Michael Andretti is considering buying Sauber, speculation has surfaced that he is considering Haas as an option.

Like his former F1 champion father Mario Andretti, Michael Andretti is an American racing legend who won the IndyCar series and also tried his hand at F1 with McLaren.

And it seems he’s not done with Formula 1 after reporting that he’s interested in the Sauber team. The Swiss team is currently co-financed by the Italian automotive giant Alfa Romeo.

In addition to Sauber, Haas also seems to be of interest to Andretti. It’s the only American team in the F1 paddock right now and it would make sense to have a bigger American investment.

The chances that Andretti will acquire a stake in the Haas F1 team if his Sauber deal fails are slim, but not zero.

However, team boss Günther Steiner is not very optimistic and confirms that, in his opinion, there have never been any concrete discussions. As for Andretti, who invests in Sauber, Steiner is perfectly fine with a rival American team.

“I’ve spoken to Michael a few times, not recently, to be honest. I don’t know what Michael is trying to do. Everyone knows each other in American racing, there may have been discussions, but perhaps not as specifically as you might think.

“I don’t see anyone as a threat [as an] American team. We have no problem with that [Sauber]wherever the team is from.

“I think what we didn’t do, we didn’t use the American market, the sponsorship market, as well as we should have, because otherwise we would have more Americans on the car.

“Nobody came knocking on our door with big sponsorship and said, ‘Because we’re Americans, that’s what we’re going to do’ or ‘That’s why we’re going to support an American driver’.”
