The eleventh round of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship 2021 began with training on Friday at the Hungaroring in Budapest as the teams were preparing for the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday.
The track action on Friday consisted of two 60-minute sessions – FP1 and FP2 – on the 4.381-kilometer circuit with 14 corners – both sessions took place in hotter than normal conditions, with an air temperature of 32 degrees Celsius (89.6 degrees Fahrenheit). ). Degrees Fahrenheit) and track a temperature of 63 degrees Celsius (145.4 degrees Fahrenheit).
Nikita Mazepin and Mick Schumacher opened the FP1 with a wake-up outing on the medium-sized Pirelli P Zero Yellow tires. Next up was a switch to the red compound for a stint on the softest rubber available – both riders drove their fastest laps despite a brief stop to the session thanks to a red flag caused by AlphaTauris Yuki Tsunoda. Schumacher logged a 1: 20.383 and finished P17, while Mazepin recorded a 1: 20.992 for P19. The session ended with a short high-fuel run to take the diamond – Schumacher stayed on softs while Mazepin took advantage of the media.
In FP2, both cars started the session in the blazing afternoon sun on the media. With a handful of steep laps, Mazepin and Schumacher returned to the pits for softs and the start of their qualifying simulation. Unfortunately for Mazepin, a puncture on his right rear tire forced an immediate return to the pits – the Russian rookie refused to tear in a fast lap. Schumacher drove a lap of 1: 19.817 on the softs and placed the German rookie on P18, while Mazepin’s previous best time on the Medium – a 1: 21.881 – gave him P20 on the timesheet. Both the medium and hard tires were later tested by each rider on long distance runs to end the session.
The Uralkali Haas F1 Team ran a total of 106 laps on Friday in FP1 and FP2 – 51 by Mazepin and 55 by Schumacher.
Nikita Mazepin: “It was a physical day but we did a lot of laps. Unfortunately I had a puncture in the afternoon that prevented me from using soft tires, but we made up for that and did a very long run perfectly on one track , on which you cannot overtake, many laps are driven, experience and data are collected. Since Silverstone we have managed to stabilize the car well and of course on a track where you lose your bum, like Silverstone, we “we” achieved good pace on long runs. We have to rebalance the car to have more front in slow corners and we will be good. “
Mick Schumacher: “I think it was a positive start in the sense that we were able to meet our running plan. Of course we are a bit behind in terms of speed, but if I hopefully get a good lap we will” I will get a little closer to Williams what we hope for. We had two very different types of tire wear in the two training sessions. Today the track temperature was 63 degrees – that’s the hottest I’ve ever seen. Temperatures should be a bit cooler for Sunday and hopefully we’ve done enough research to keep up with the others. “
Günther Steiner: “It was a pretty good session. We had a slow tire damage on his soft tire with Nikita in FP2, which we have to investigate. No real problem – we just did our job. We have enough data and the guys have it done. Learn the route in a Formula 1 car. So far everything is good. Let’s see what we can do tomorrow. “
