He could not say goodbye to Romain Grosjean from Formula 1 testing

Haas unable to give Grosjean farewell Formula 1 test

Grosjean had to miss the last two races of the 2020 season due to injuries to his hands in his violent accident at the Bahrain Grand Prix two weeks ago.

It was an early end to Grosjean’s time at Haas, having previously confirmed his exit at the end of the current season, and it would have been his last F1 appearance.

Grosjean previously said if he can’t drive in Abu Dhabi he will arrange a private test after his recovery to make sure the accident isn’t his last memory of Formula 1.

But Grosjean won’t be able to do this test with the Haas team he raced for five seasons because they don’t have any old machines available and run for him to test.

“Unfortunately we don’t have any old cars because we don’t have any aggregates,” team boss Steiner told Motorsport.com.

“We have a lot of old cars, but they don’t have an engine, so unfortunately we can’t.

“Maybe we have something in the future, I don’t know. But at the moment I couldn’t make that promise. “

Mercedes have already announced that they will arrange a test for Grosjean in one of their older cars if no other team can pick it up.

Steiner hoped that at some future event it would be possible to arrange a run for Grosjean for Ferrari, who powers Haas, rather than pulling an engine just for a test in a Haas car.

“It’s more likely that he can speak to Ferrari to let him drive one of their older cars if they are doing an event or something,” Steiner said.

“That is certainly possible. I think that’s an easier solution than prepping a car because they have the department that does it for the customers. We don’t currently have these resources.

“But if he wants to do it, I’ll let him heal completely and then we’ll see what he wants to do and what he can do.

“Then we’ll decide whether he can turn it into a good day of fun, the last day in an F1 car for him.”

Grosjean returned to Switzerland earlier this week, where he will continue treating burns on his hands sustained in the accident.

Once he’s recovered, he’s allowed to test at least two-year-old F1 machines, which means he’ll be able to drive a 2019 spec car from early next year.

Grosjean announced Friday that he intends to race in Abu Dhabi wearing a special helmet design created by his three young children.

“This is the most beautiful helmet I could ever imagine,” wrote Grosjean on Instagram. “It was developed by Sacha, Simon and Camille for my last F1 race in Abu Dhabi.

“I’ll try to give it a try in the future as it’s way too good to stay home unused!”
